DESCRIPTION
PROTOTYPE
The Class 86 Bo-Bo electric locomotive was the first large scale electric brought into the running service and was developed from the earlier class 81 – 85’s. These locomotives were built in Doncaster between 1965 and 1966 and were designed for use on the high speed routes on the newly electrified West Coast line and could be used for both freight and passenger services.

Some of the locomotives in this class were named after cities that they pass through. After privatisation the locomotives were split between various railway operators (EWS, Freightliner, Anglia and others) They could often be seen in a push-pull formation with MK3 driving van trailer (DVT).
